performing dancer: Gal levinson, Aviv Keshet

A performance work for three bodies in the public space of Jerusalem.
The work continues Maayan Cohen Marciano ongoing research of the body as both material
and site. Through the act of tracing bodily outlines within space, the work examines the
relationship between the body and its marking within Israeli public space.
Within visual culture, the outline is associated with evidence of absence: a sign of a body that
was once there and is now gone. The contour maps the body, rendering it legible, identifiable,
and readable. Here, this gesture is displaced from its familiar context. The body is marked
and marks itself , while still alive and present. The traces appear before disappearance.
Through this visual disruption, the work addresses the mechanisms and projections imposed
upon bodies in public space, and the ways in which a body rapidly becomes image, symbol,
map, and territory.
The outline appears here not only as a sign of death or absence, but as a mechanism that
seeks to fix the body within meaning. Against this fixation, the body, in its materiality, asserts
its autonomy while observing the system that marks it.
